A resilient response

Through Executive Decree No. 859 of September 5th, 2023, the Ecuadorian State designated the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE) the responsibility of establishing the design and operation of the Amazon Biocorridor. The entity also made a commitment to establish a financial mechanism to generate economic resources for the benefit of the population and conservation.

The Amazon Biocorridor is much more than a piece of territory. It is a comprehensive response to environmental challenges, a resilient solution to the vulnerabilities that today threaten Ecuador’s economic and social stability. Through innovative mechanisms – both financial and conservation – the Biocorridor places the Amazon as the protagonist of a program that has the power to transform the future.

The Amazon Biocorridor Program is the result of a process that was designed and continues to work in constant collaboration with the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE), an organization that brings together more than 1,500 communities and represents 11 indigenous nationalities of the Amazon and 22 affiliated organizations.

The objective is to support indigenous peoples and nationalities, as well as local communities, to play an active role in conservation decision-making processes that affect their territories and well-being, and to ensure that new sustainable development opportunities are in line with their cultural and environmental values.
